Legalization of Medical Marijuana in Colorado

On November 7, 2000, 54% of Colorado voters approved Amendment 20, which amended the State Constitution to allow the use of marijuana in the state for approved patients with written medical consent.

Amendment 20 passed in 2000 and took effect the following year. This exempted patients with written documentation from their physicians from criminal prosecution.

Quantity of Marijuana

Since the enactment of Colorado Amendment 64 in November 2012, adults aged 21 or older can grow; up to six marijuana plants privately in a locked space, legally possess all marijuana from the plants they grow (as long as it stays where it was grown), legally possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis while traveling and give as a gift up to 1 ounce to other citizens 21 years of age or older. Any adult in Colorado's territory may possess up to one ounce of marijuana at any time, however non-Colorado residents may only purchase up to one-quarter of an ounce at a time. Consumption is permitted in a manner similar to alcohol, with equivalent offenses prescribed for driving. Consumption in public still remains illegal though.

 Treatment for illnesses in Colorado

Conditions recognized for medical marijuana in Colorado include; Cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS positive, cachexia, severe pain, severe nausea and seizures. Other conditions including those that are characteristic of epilepsy; or persistent muscle spasms, including those that are characteristic of multiple sclerosis. Other conditions are subject to approval by the Colorado Board of Health.

People with a Colorado ID can buy up to an ounce of marijuana at a time. People with an out-of-state ID can buy up to a quarter ounce.
